Vidyarambham — known in Tamil homes as எழுத்து தொடக்கம் or எழுத்தறிவித்தல், and in some families as Aksharabhyasam — is the ceremony where a child writes for the very first time. A teacher holds the child's finger and traces the first letter, usually அ or ஓம், on a plate of rice. It marks the beginning of a lifetime of learning, and Vijayadashami is the day it is traditionally done.
For 26 years, Cambridge Group of Schools has been the place where Madurai families hold this ceremony. In 2026 we are hosting it at all three campuses, so that every family in the city has a Cambridge Vidyarambham within a short drive.

What happens at the Cambridge Vidyarambham ceremony
- Welcome and blessing. Families are received at the campus, decorated for Vijayadashami, and the ceremony begins with a short prayer.
- The first letter. A senior teacher guides your child's finger to write the first letter on rice. Parents are welcome to take photographs and videos.
- First classroom visit. Your child steps into the Pre-KG classroom and the play arena, so the first memory of school is a happy one.
- Sweets and a keepsake. Every child leaves with a small memento of the day.
- Admission on the spot. If you are ready, our admission team completes the Pre-KG admission the same morning. Older siblings can also be admitted to LKG, UKG or Standards 1-8.
Who should attend
- Parents of children aged 2½ to 3+ planning Pre-KG for 2026-27 — the classic Vidyarambham age
- Families who want their child's first letter written in the school the child will grow up in
- Parents of older children joining Cambridge mid-year, who would like to begin on an auspicious day
What to bring
Nothing is required for the ceremony itself — the rice tray, the lamp and the keepsake are arranged by the school. Many families dress the child in traditional wear for the photographs. If you would like to complete admission on the day, carry the child's birth certificate, Aadhaar copies of the child and parents, and passport-size photographs. For Standard 1 and above, add the Transfer Certificate and last report card.
